‘Milk price not increased,’ clarifies commissioner Karachi

Iftikhar Shahlwani

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shahlwani has denied the reports of milk price hike in the city and warned ‘a particular group’ was working covertly to get the milk rates increased, ARY News reported Wednesday.

In a statement, the commissioner said action will be taken against milk retailers who sell it against the government-fixed price.

He also warned of legal action if any retailer or dairy farmer raised the milk prices on their own.

He said respective magistrates, deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners would keep the check on price of milk in their areas.

Earlier in the day, Sindh Minster for Agriculture, Supply and Prices Muhammad Ismail Rahu asked people to register complaint with the relevant deputy commissioner if they were sold milk at high price anywhere in the city.

Directing the milk-sellers to sale milk at the price fixed by the government, the minister West warned that action would be taken against dairy farmers and retailers for selling milk at inflated price.

Milk price soared by Rs23 a litre overnight a day ago, following which milk is being sold at Rs120 a litre. This has put milk-sellers at loggerheads with the government.

The president Dairy Milk Association (DMA) has confirmed the price hike, while Vice Chairman DMA Saleem Gujjar said milk price was not raised at retail level. Gujjar claimed that retailers were selling milk at the price fixed by the Karachi commissioner.
