Delay start of new English season as ECB suspend professional cricket till May 28
London: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to delay the start of the new English summer till May 28 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
ECB after discussing with the First-Class Counties, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) approved a seven-week delay to the start of the 2020 season.
An ECB media statement read as: “It was agreed that, given the current information available, a seven-week delay to the start of the season is the most appropriate approach.”
The ECB said it had begun modeling a range of options to start the season in June, July or August but the immediate focus is on options for cricket in June including the three-Test series against West Indies, the Twenty20 Blast and England Women’s schedule against India.
ECB also stated that they are in continuous talk with the government and the start of the new season might be possible behind closed doors where fans can see the action through live broadcast.
“With the information available to us at the moment a delay to the start of the professional cricket season until May 28 was unavoidable,” said ECB chief executive officer Tom Harrison.
“Securing the future of the game will be a primary focus as we plot a revised schedule with an emphasis on the most financially important forms of the game for the counties across international and domestic cricket,” he added.
It must be noted here that Coronavirus has effected the entire world at this moment. The majority of the countries have locked down their cities to restrict the spread of this virus. Almost all sports activities around the world have been postponed for an indefinite period of time.
