AB de Villiers decides not to play Big Bash League 2020

Karachi: Former South African star batsman AB de Villiers decided not to feature for Brisbane Heat in this year’s Big Bash League, starting from December 3 due to family and COVID-19 related issues.

The 36-year-old hoped stated that he and his wife Danielle were expecting their third child. “It’s exciting for Danielle and me with the arrival of our new baby very soon,” de Villiers said in a Heat statement.

“So, with a young, growing family, and the uncertainty around travel and conditions due to COVID-19, we reluctantly decided it wasn’t going to be this season,” he added.

De Villiers scored 146 runs at an average of 24.33 last season and hoped that he was very open to returning in the future.

Heat head coach Darren Lehmann said that he respected de Villiers’s decision and hoped he would return to the club at some stage beyond this season.

“We have always stressed the importance of family within the Heat and this is an instance where we fully back any decisions that AB makes in this regard. We’ll stay in contact and see what develops” he said.

Meanwhile, Heat has resigned Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rehman, who is No.2 ranked T20I bowler.
