Injured Babar Azam to miss second New Zealand Test
Christchurch: Pakistan captain Babar Azam will miss the second New Zealand Test as he is yet to recover from a thumb injury, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced today.
The 26-year-old didn’t take part in the T20I series and 1st Test at Mount Maunganui. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan will continue to lead Pakistan in his absence.
Babar had participated in a training session on Friday but the team’s management opted to not include him in the second Test after he reported slight pain in his thumb, to avoid any risk of further injury.
“Babar had a full-fledged training session yesterday but felt a slight pain in his thumb, following which, the team management has opted against taking any risk,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement.
Team Doctor Dr Sohail Saleem: “We have seen improvement in Babar Azam’s injury but he is yet to fully recover. He is our captain and the most important batsman in the lineup, so we do not want to take any risk.
“The medical team is constantly reviewing his injury and we are hopeful he will be available for the home series against South Africa.”
The second and final Test is scheduled to start tomorrow at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Blackcaps are 1-0 in the series as they defeated visitors after a tough resistance by 101 runs.
