Olympian Islahuddin reminisces 1978 Hockey World Cup triumph
KARACHI: Hockey World Cup-winning captain, Islahuddin said it was one of the exciting and unforgettable moments of his career.
Speaking on the occasion of the 1978 Hockey World Cup-winning anniversary, Islah said the team played like a warrior and they didn’t lose or draw a single match in that tournament.
“We played like a team and gave solid competition to some top teams in the tournament. We didn’t lose or draw a single match in that tournament,” he said.
“We scored 32 goals and conceded just four goals in the tournament. Our players were the symbol of threat to the opponents and we won the world cup by defeating Holland in the final,” he added.
Islah said that the 1978 World Cup has a special place in his heart as he led the national team. “It is unforgettable for me and our entire team. Still today, we recall those moments and cheer them together,” he shared.
It must be noted here that Pakistan has won the most (4) Hockey World Cup in history. Pakistan won the first edition of the World Cup in 1971, then won in 1978, 1982, and 1994.
