Michael Holding announces retirement from commentary
Karachi: Michael Holding has announced his retirement from commentary after serving for more than 30 years in broadcasting.
Former West Indies paceman Holding, known as the ‘Whispering Death’, played 60 Tests and 102 ODIs, claiming 391 wickets before moving behind the microphone following his retirement from playing in 1987.
Speaking to a radio talk show in Barbados last April, Holding had indicated he “cannot see myself going much further down the road at my age”.
Away from cricket, Holding has recently gained praise and attention for his anti-racism campaigning.
During an England v West Indies Test match in July 2020, Holding spoke on Sky Sports about the Black Lives Matter movement and the players from both sides taking the knee before play. The footage gathered attention across the world and on social media.
He went on to publish a book called ‘Why We Kneel, How We Rise’ about racism and features other famous sportspeople such as Usain Bolt, Naomi Osaka and Michael Johnson.
Meanwhile, cricketers and fans have reacted to the news and wished ‘Happy Retirement’ to Holding.

A lot of cricket people didnt know or acknowledge racism's existence until Michael Holding put everyone on blast.
The fact he got several cricket fans/journalists/tv companies to at least pay lip service speaks to the cultural icon that he was and became.
